How to Access Bean Town's Wi-Fi Signal

If you are installing a new Wi-Fi card into your computer, please refer to the owner’s manual of the Wi-Fi card for specific information on installing drivers. PDA’s, Mac and Windows XP computers will generally auto-configure to pick up the wireless signal. If your device does not automatically detect the wireless signal:

1. Set the SSID to: beantown
2. Confirm WEP is disabled
3. Confirm DHCP is enabled (automatically obtain an IP address).
4. Confirm auto-dialup is disabled
5. Confirm Infrastructure mode is enabled (rather than ad-hoc mode).

If you don’t know how to set these parameters, following are instructions for operating systems which may require manual setup:

Windows 95/98/ME/NT | Windows 2000 | Windows XP

 

Windows 95/98/ME/NT

Setting the SSID and disabling WEP

1. From the Desktop, press the ‘Start’ button.
2. Select ‘Settings’
3. Select ‘Control Panel’
4. Double Click the ‘Network’ Icon
5. In the ‘Network’ window, click on the name of your wireless card
6. Click the ‘Properties’ button
7. Click Advanced Tab, specify Network Type: (a) select ‘Infrastructure Mode’ and (b) set Value to ‘Yes’
8. In the Advanced Tab, specify the SSID (ESSID): (a) select ‘SSID’ and enter beantown (all lowercase)
9. Verify that WEP Encryption is off: select ‘Encryption’ and make sure value is set to ‘disable’
10. Close ‘Properties’ window
11. Close ‘Local Area Connection’ window
12. Restart computer if prompted to do so

Configuring DHCP

1. From the Desktop, press ‘Start’
2. Select 'Settings'
3. Select ‘Control Panel’ and double click ‘Network’ icon
4. In the 'Properties' window, double click the TCP/IP selection for your wireless card
5. Click “Obtain an IP Address Automatically” and “Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically”
6. Close the 'TCP/IP’ window
7. Close the ‘Properties’ window
8. Restart computer if prompted to do so

 

Windows 2000

Setting the SSID and disabling WEP

1. From the Desktop, press the ‘Start’ button.
2. Select ‘Settings’
3. Select ‘Control Panel’
4. Double Click the ‘Network and Dial-up Connection’ Icon
5. Double Click the ‘Local Area Connections’ Icon
6. Once in the ‘Local Area Connections’ dialog box, click ‘Properties’
7. Click ‘Configure’ listed under the name of your wireless card and click the ‘Advanced’ Tab
8. In the Advanced Tab, specify the Network Type: (a) select ‘Infrastructure Mode’, (b) set Value to ‘Yes’
9. In the Advanced Tab, specify the SSID (ESSID): (a) select ‘SSID’ and enter beantown (all lowercase)
10. Verify that WEP Encryption is off: select ‘Encryption’ and make sure value is set to ‘disable’

Detecting the Wi-Fi Signal

1. Right click the Network Icon on the Task Bar (bottom right corner of screen)
2. Select “View Available Wireless Networks”
3. Select: beantown
4. Click the box that says “Allow me to connect…”
5. Press “Connect”

Configuring DHCP

1. From the Desktop, press ‘Start’
2. Select ‘Control Panel’ and double click ‘Network Connections’
3. Double click ‘Wireless Network Connection’
4. Press ‘Properties’
5. Double click ‘Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)’
6. Select “Obtain an IP Address Automatically” and “Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically”
7. Press ‘OK’ twice
